How to use it
Pick the school first
A necromancer and an illusionist want different names. Generate a few and keep the one that matches their magic.
Use the quirk
Every wizard comes with one habit or problem. It's a ready-made reason for them to need the party.
Shorten it
Long names get a nickname at the table. Decide what the apprentices call them behind their back.
Example wizard names
Wizards: Lysander Gloombottom, Fenwick Stormstaff, Gideon of the Thousand Doors, Alaric of the Hollow Moon, Percival Emberpage, Valerian Emberbottom, Thaddeus Ravenfell, Zebedee Tallowbottom.
Sorceresses and witches: Prudence of the Drowned Library, Belladonna Stormmore, Minerva Starstaff, Hester of the Glass Spire, Drusilla Candlepage, Rosamund Quillwick, Beatrix Crowmantle, Minerva Mistvale.
What makes a wizard name
Wizard names borrow from Latin and Greek (Cornelius, Septimus, Isadora) because they sound learned and old. The surname often hints at the craft, a candle, a quill, a rune, or names a place of study. A name that is slightly too long is part of the joke: wizards rarely use one syllable when five will do.
