D&D monster generator
An original homebrew monster for the challenge rating you pick. The combat numbers (armor class, hit points, attack bonus, damage per round and save DC) come from the Dungeon Master's Guide table for that CR, and the creature is designed around them: traits, actions, tactics, its lair, a hook and what it leaves behind.
How to use it
The numbers are balanced for you
AI is good at ideas and bad at math, so the generator sets the numbers first from the DMG's monster statistics by CR, then asks for a creature that uses them. Check the actions against the line at the top of the card.
Pick the CR from your party
A single monster with a CR equal to the party's level is a fair fight for four characters. For a boss, go two or three higher; for a pack, lower and use several.
Use the traits, not just the damage
A memorable monster changes how the fight plays: it hides, it splits, it drags someone away. Read the traits and tactics before the session and plan where the fight happens.
Balance a whole fight
Building an encounter around it? The D&D encounter generator picks monsters and checks the XP budget for your party.
How to make a homebrew monster
Start with the challenge rating, not the flavor. The CR tells you roughly how much armor class, how many hit points and how much damage per round the creature should have; get those right and the fight will feel fair. Then decide what makes it different from a bag of hit points: one trait that changes the battlefield, one action players will remember, and a reason it's here.
Finally, give it a place in the world. A lair the party has to enter, signs of it before they meet it, and something worth taking when it's gone turn a monster into an adventure.
Questions
Is the D&D monster generator free?
Yes. It's free with no account, up to 40 rolls a day.
How are the stats balanced?
Each challenge rating has target numbers in the 5e Dungeon Master's Guide: armor class, hit points, attack bonus, damage per round and save DC. The generator uses those targets, so a CR 5 monster hits and soaks like a CR 5 monster.
Are these official monsters?
No. Every monster is new, written for your game. For official stat blocks, use the 5e System Reference Document or your books.
Can I choose the type of monster?
Yes: beast, monstrosity, undead, aberration, fiend, fey, construct, dragon, elemental, plant or ooze, and where it lives.
Is Quillroll affiliated with Wizards of the Coast?
No. Quillroll is an independent tool. Dungeons & Dragons is a trademark of Wizards of the Coast.
