AI Dungeon alternatives
AI Dungeon made AI text adventures popular, but it isn't the only option. Here's how four alternatives compare, and who each one suits.
Prices and features checked October 2026. Quillroll is our product; we've tried to be fair to the others.

Why people look for an alternative
The most common reasons we see in reviews and forums are memory (long stories losing track of earlier details), filters that stop a scene without explaining why, and price once you want a better model or a longer context. None of the apps below solves everything; they make different trade-offs.
Quillroll
Good for: players who want a short, clear game loop. Each turn gives three choices or lets you type your own action, and the game tracks your health and inventory. Four ready-made worlds (fantasy, sci-fi, 1920s mystery, spooky) or your own premise. A running summary keeps long adventures consistent.
Not for: mature or adult roleplay (stories stay PG-13), multiplayer, or people who want deep control over model settings. It's also new, so there's no community scenario library yet.
Price: free daily turns; Pro is $7.99/month or $59/year for 3,000 turns every 30 days; a $4.99 one-time pack gives 500 turns. The generators are free.
NovelAI
Good for: writers. NovelAI is a writing assistant first, with lorebooks, style controls and a large context on its top tier, plus image generation. You can use it for adventures, but it feels more like co-writing than playing a game.
Price: a free trial with a limited number of generations, then Tablet $10, Scroll $15 or Opus $25 per month.
Friends & Fables
Good for: D&D fans. It runs campaigns on 5e-style rules with character sheets, combat and maps, and you can invite friends to the same campaign. Users can publish worlds for others to play.
Price: free players get daily credits; paid plans add more credits, world slots and bigger campaigns. Check their site for current prices.
Character.AI Stories
Good for: people who already use Character.AI. Since late 2025, users under 18 can't use open-ended chat and are pointed to Stories, a guided interactive-fiction format. It's more chat-first than game-first.
Price: free with ads and daily limits; c.ai+ is $9.99/month. See our Character.AI alternatives page for more options.

Questions
Is there a free alternative to AI Dungeon?
Yes. Quillroll gives 10 free turns a day without an account (20 signed in), Friends & Fables has free daily credits, and NovelAI has a short free trial. AI Dungeon itself also has a free tier.
Which AI Dungeon alternative is best for D&D?
Friends & Fables is built around 5e rules and multiplayer campaigns. Quillroll is lighter: no dice to manage, plus free D&D character, NPC, shop and quest generators.
Which one is best for writing a novel?
NovelAI. It's designed as a writing assistant with long context and fine control, rather than a turn-by-turn game.
Is Quillroll made by the same people as AI Dungeon?
No. Quillroll is an independent project and isn't affiliated with Latitude, AI Dungeon or any other product on this page.
