How to use it
Elves often have two names
In many settings, an elf uses a child name until about a hundred years old and takes an adult name later. Give your character one of each and let the party learn the second.
Family names tell a story
Elven family names like Moonwhisper or Silverfrond often come from a place or an old deed. Ask what your character's ancestor did to earn it.
Make it easy to say at the table
Long elven names sound great but get shortened fast. Pick one your group can say, or plan a nickname the party will use.
Half-elves
Switch the race to Half-elf for names that mix human and elven sounds, which suits a character raised between two worlds.
Example elf names
Feminine: Saedrilara Frostgleam, Saerive Amberglade, Raenis Goldbough, Elathera Nightleaf, Tharilara Frostglade, Nylune Mistweaver, Ililalune Briarbreeze, Elanethia Frostdancer.
Masculine: Nyrithas Rainleaf, Aelathas Willowfall, Ilidriros Starweaver, Aernymir Briarglade, Raelondor Duskglade, Thivavin Mistgleam, Elarimir Ambersong, Maelovalen Everweaver.
How to make an elf name sound elven
Elven names lean on soft consonants (L, N, R, TH, S) and long, open vowels, and they rarely end in a hard stop. Endings like -iel, -ian, -wen, -thas and -ara do a lot of the work. Family names usually join two nature words, a light or sky word with a plant or water word, which is why so many sound like Moonbrook or Starwhisper.
Questions
Is the elf name generator free?
Yes. Names are put together in your browser, so it's free with no sign-up and no limit.
Are these names from D&D books?
No. They're built from syllables in the style of D&D and Tolkien-inspired elves, so they're original and safe to use in your own campaign or writing.
Can I get wood elf, high elf or drow names?
The generator makes general elven names that fit any subrace. For drow, pick names with harder sounds (Z, V, X) from the list, or add a house name in front.
Can I use the names in a published book or game?
Yes. They're generated from word parts, so you can use them however you like.
