Chat app or story game?
Character.AI is a chat app: you pick a character and talk with it for as long as you like. Plenty of people use it to roleplay adventures, but there's no game underneath: no goal, no stakes, nothing that tracks what you found or how hurt you are. Since late 2025, users under 18 can't use open-ended chat at all and are pointed to Character.AI's Stories format instead.
Story games work differently. A narrator sets a scene, you decide what to do, and your choices change what happens next. The characters are still there to talk to, but they live inside a plot.

Quillroll
A text adventure where you play a character in a story. Pick a fantasy, sci-fi, 1920s mystery or spooky world, or describe your own. Each turn you get three choices or type anything; the narrator plays every other character and keeps track of your health and items. Stories stay PG-13, so it works for teens and for anyone who doesn't want a chat to drift somewhere uncomfortable.

A writing tool rather than a game: you write alongside the AI with lorebooks and style controls. Good if your Character.AI chats were really collaborative fiction. Free trial, then $10, $15 or $25 a month.
Friends & Fables
An AI game master for Dungeons & Dragons style campaigns, with rules, combat and the option to play with friends. The most “game” of the group if you like tabletop RPGs. Free players get daily credits.
