Magic item generator
Three original magic items at a time for your treasure hoards and shops. Pick a rarity and a kind of item, or roll for both. Each item has what it looks like, what it does, whether it needs attunement, a quirk, a little history and a suggested price.
How to use it
Match rarity to level
Uncommon items suit levels 1–4, rare items levels 5–10, very rare from 11 and legendary items near the end of a campaign.
Use the quirk
A sword that hums near undead or a ring that only works at night gives players something to roleplay and you a hook to use.
Let the history lead somewhere
Every item has a short history. A previous owner who wants it back is an adventure waiting to happen.
Stock a shop
Need a whole shop? The D&D shop generator makes a magic shop with an owner and a price list.
Magic item rarity and price guide
The price ranges the Dungeon Master's Guide suggests for each rarity, which the generator uses for its suggested prices:
| Rarity | Price | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Common | 50–100 gp | Small magic with flavor: a cloak that's always dry, a candle that never goes out. |
| Uncommon | 101–500 gp | A real edge: +1 weapons, healing potions, a bag that holds more than it should. |
| Rare | 501–5,000 gp | Changes how a character plays. A reward for finishing an adventure. |
| Very rare | 5,001–50,000 gp | Campaign-defining items for high-level parties. |
| Legendary | 50,001 gp or more | Items stories are written about. Usually not for sale at all. |
Questions
Is the magic item generator free?
Yes. It's free with no account, up to 40 rolls a day.
Can I use it as a D&D loot generator?
Yes. Roll at the rarity that fits the party's level and drop one or two items into the treasure, alongside coins.
Are the items balanced for 5e?
The items are written to match the power of their rarity in the 5e Dungeon Master's Guide, and the price follows the DMG's ranges. Read the effect before handing it out and adjust anything that feels too strong for your table.
What kinds of items can it make?
Weapons, armor, wondrous items, rings, potions, wands and staves, and scrolls.
Is Quillroll affiliated with Wizards of the Coast?
No. Quillroll is an independent tool. Dungeons & Dragons is a trademark of Wizards of the Coast.
