How to use it

Name the landmark

Ask what a traveler sees first, a mill, a ford, a burnt oak, and build the name around it.

Use the hook

Every name comes with one line of trouble or local color. Read it out as the party arrives.

Cluster villages

Neighboring villages often share a root: Ashby, Little Ashby and Ashby Cross. It makes a map feel real.

How real villages got their names

Most English village names describe the land or the people who lived there: a ford, an ash tree, a clearing (-ley), a farm (-ton or -wick). Prefixes like Little, Upper and Nether separate villages that grew up near each other. Copy that and your village will feel like it has been there for centuries.
